Man United line up top quality £12.5m World Cup winner

Manchester United are considering a £12.5m move for German World Cup winner Benedikt Howedes, according to reports from Metro.

Red Devils chief Louis van Gaal is thought to be desperate to bolster his defensive options at the end of the season after being forced to use youngsters such as Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett this season, and is understood to see the Schalke centre-back as an option.

Howedes has been a regular for the Gelsenkirchen outfit for some time and played a key role at left-back for his nation as they won the World Cup last year.

Schalke chief Roberto De Matteo is believed to be desperate to keep his enforcer, but with the player eager to move to England reports suggest that a £12.5m offer may be enough to secure his services.

United are rumoured to have already all but sealed a summer deal for another German star in the shape of Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan.
