Man United midfield target set to stay in Italy

Manchester United’s hopes of landing Nigel de Jong from AC Milan have suffered a big blow, with reports from talkSPORT indicating that he’ll extend his contract at the San Siro.

The former Manchester City enforcer emerged as a surprise target for the Red Devils over the summer as Louis van Gaal set about addressing his midfield concerns.

Ultimately the club’s pursuit of Arturo Vidal cost them the chance to land the 29-year-old – whom LVG coached at the World Cup – but a return in January has been rumoured.

However, De Jong is set to stay with Milan

It’s understood that meetings with the club’s hierarchy are already scheduled in which his future will be the main topic of discussion.

The midfield ‘hard man’ will be a free agent next summer if his deal is not prolonged, and the Rossoneri are thought to be keen to sort the situation soon.

Should De Jong secure a new contract, United could intensify their pursuit of Roma’s Kevin Strootman.
