Manchester United will need to appoint top managerial target Jose Mourinho if they are to stand a chance of signing Real Madrid star Raphael Varane, Daily Star reports.
The 23-year-old has been unable to hold down a regular role ever since Zinedine Zidane took charge of the La Liga giants back in January.
He is currently behind first-choice defensive pair Sergio Ramos and Pepe in the pecking order despite being regarded as a key member for the French national team.
Varane is now keen to be reunited with Mourinho at Old Trafford, given that it was the Portuguese manager who decided to sign him from Lens during his time at the Bernabeu back in 2011.
Current United boss Louis van Gaal is under heavy pressure from the board and will need to win his final game against Bournemouth and hope rivals Manchester City lose to Swansea City in order to finish in the top four.
Despite leading his squad to the FA Cup final, where they will face Crystal Palace, later this month, his job is still far from safe.
