According to Don Balon, Real Betis midfielder Fabian Ruiz is nearing a surprise move to Manchester United ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.
United boss Jose Mourinho is desperate to sign at least one new central midfielder this summer, and a number of players have been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Michael Carrick has retired from professional football to become a coach, whilst Marouane Fellaini is expected to move on this summer – leaving United short in central midfield.
Nice’s Jean Michael Seri is the latest star to be mentioned, but according to Don Balon, United are nearing a deal for Betis midfielder Ruiz.
The report claims that the Red Devils were in a direct battle with Barcelona for the signature of the Spaniard, and have agreed a £26.3m deal with Betis to sign a player who has been capped on five occasions by Spain Under-21s.
Ruiz, who came through the youth system at Betis, spent part of the 2016-17 campaign on loan at Elche in the Segunda Division – scoring once in 18 appearances.
The 22-year-old shone at Betis during the 2017-18 season, however, scoring three times and registering six assists in 34 La Liga appearances.
Ruiz has a contract with his current club until the summer of 2023, but it is being reported that a deal of just over £26m has been agreed.
The news surrounding the Spaniard will cast further doubt over the future of Ander Herrera, who will also soon be out of contract, and is believed to be unsettled.
At 6ft 2inches, Ruiz certainly has the frame to operate in the Premier League, and United boss Mourinho is seemingly on the verge of securing what would be a surprise deal.
