Manchester United must sign an “experienced” centre-back in January if they are to achieve their aim of a top four finish this season, according to former star Paul McGrath.
The Red Devils’ defensive options have been stretched this season following the exits of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, and injuries to a host of first-team players.
During the weekend win over Arsenal Louis van Gaal fielded a central trio of Chris Smalling, Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett, with the latter two having not made first-team appearances for the club prior to this term.
Although they picked up three points against the Gunners, the visitors were opened up on multiple occasions and owe much to Arsene Wenger’s sides’ failings in front of goal.
Mats Hummels, as well as a host of other names, are rumoured targets for the club heading into the January transfer window, and McGrath feels that his old side have to sign a proven centre-back at the next opportunity:
“Van Gaal will want money to spend [in the January transfer window],”he told talkSPORT. “They badly need an older, more experienced defender.
“It’s all about what you’re allowed to spend and what players will come to the club.
“Man United could have let in a few more goals against Arsenal, they were fortunate.”
