Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal may have his players to thank for keeping him in work, according to football agent Vincenzo Morabito, who has claimed that senior stars blocked a move for Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese tactician was sensationally sacked by Chelsea last month after a horrendous start to the season at Stamford Bridge, but within days of the news breaking he was already being aligned with a switch to Old Trafford.
Amid widespread disdain among fans towards Van Gaal, Mourinho became a popular figure in the stands, but a move for his services now appears unlikely with results having improved slightly for the Dutchman.
And well-connected agent, Morabito, has claimed that Mourinho taking over at the Theatre of Dreams was a reality until some United players voiced concerns:
“United are looking for a few reinforcements, but Van Gaal is in a ‘limbo phase’: he is lucky to have on his side the players that did not want Mourinho.” He told Corriere dello Sport (via Metro).
Mourinho, 52, is one of the most successful managers in the modern era, but his divisive personality is seen as an issue by many, and has cost him jobs in the past.
