Man United ponder move for English wonderkid

Southampton Defender Luke Shaw

Manchester United manager David Moyes has identified Southampton’s Luke Shaw as a transfer target, if he can’t bring Leighton Baines with him to Old Trafford.

The Daily Star is reporting that Moyes has made Baines his priority target at United, but Everton chairman Bill Kenwright has refused to sell the talented English defender.

Southampton left-back Luke Shaw will be made the new Red Devils’ manager’s next target, if he gives up on Baines.

Shaw has been linked with a move to Chelsea, after a hugely impressive first season in the Premier League with the Saints. The England Under-21 defender is regarded as one of the best youngsters in England.

The Old Trafford side are keen to sign a new left-back, with rumours linking current captain Patrice Evra with a move to Ligue 1, and to either PSG or Monaco. And with Bill Kenwright determined to keep Baines at Everton, United legend and club ambassador Denis Irwin is convinced the champions will sign Shaw.

“I’ve heard a word that the new manager might have Luke Shaw at the top of his list,” Irwin said.

“The teenage Southampton full-back is the latest in a long line of prodigies from that club’s excellent youth system.”

Southampton have sold Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gareth Bale over recent years, all of whom have come through the club’s academy.

But should United sign Shaw? Is he ready for the biggest of stages?
