Manchester United are planning a surprise move to bring Barcelona defender Gerard Pique back to Old Trafford, according to the Express.
This comes in response to United’s failure to sign former Manchester City defender Stefan Savic from Fiorentina – with the Montenegro international deciding to sign a new four-and-a-half year deal with the Serie A outfit.
A statement from the Viola said: “Fiorentina announces it has reached an agreement with Stefan Savic to renew his contract.
“Savic has signed a contract that will keep him tied to the club until June 30, 2019.”
And the Express are reporting United are now turning their attentions to Barcelona centre-half Pique, who left Old Trafford for the Nou Camp in 2008.
Pique worked under Louis Van Gaal during the Dutchman’s two stints as Barcelona manager between 1997-2000 and 2002-2003.
Van Gaal failed to replace the departed Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic since replacing David Moyes last summer, and is reportedly in the market to strengthen his defence this January.
Meanwhile, United are reportedly hoping to hijack Arsenal’s move for Villarreal defender Gabriel Paulista.
