Man United ready to beat Liverpool to ‘new Xabi Alonso’

Manchester United have upped their interest in Atletico Madrid’s midfield sensation Saul Niguez, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The 20-year-old is seen as one of Spanish football’s up and coming talents and has even been mooted as the potential long-term successor to former Liverpool playmaker Xabi Alonso.

He netted Atleti’s second goal in a stunning 4-0 Madrid derby win over the weekend, and it’s understood that his performances have alerted United.

Niguez has also been linked with Liverpool in the past, and is known for his silky passing style.

Reports claim that the youngster could be available for around £9m, but with this being his first real season in the Rojiblancos’ first-team – he impressed on loan at Rayo Vallecano – the reigning La Liga champions may be reluctant to sell.

Niguez came through the ranks at Atletico, playing for their ‘B’ team, and has won caps at almost every level of youth football for Spain.
