Man United ready to end transfer pursuit if major target stays

Manchester United will give up on plans to bring in a new defender this summer if Sergio Ramos opts to stay at Real Madrid, according to reports from the Manchester Evening News.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with the 29-year-old Spaniard in recent weeks amid speculation that Louis van Gaal is desperate to add a commanding centre-back to his ranks following an £80m+ spend to lure in the likes of Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.

However, even though there is still over a month of the transfer window to go, reports claim that United are not interested in any other targets, and that if Ramos does stay with Real they will stick with their current options.

Such a state of affairs may materialise with the Los Blancos star thought to be moving towards signing a new contract at the Bernabeu, while reports have also claimed that a move for Nicolas Otamendi – a long-standing alternative – is not on the club’s agenda.

Van Gaal can call on the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans as orthodox centre-backs, while Marcos Rojo, Michael Carrick and Daley Blind can also play in the role.
