Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal has reportedly instructed executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to target Ings after being impressed by the 23-year-old during Burnley’s 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford in February.
Liverpool are understood to have made solid progress in their attempts to sign Ings, with manager Brendan Rodgers identifying the England U-21 international as a target earlier this season.
But with United now in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League, almost certainly at Liverpool’s expense, the club believe they can convince Ings to move to Manchester.
Although the Clarets have struggled in the Premier League this season and suffered another loss on Saturday away to Everton, their main hitman has often been their standout player, scoring nine top flight goals in total.
