The 26-year-old Holland keeper is believed to be high on the list of the Red Devils’ potential transfer targets, and with the future of current United no.1 David de Gea still in the balance, the club may make a move sooner rather than later.
The Old Trafford outfit are resigned to the fact that De Gea is not going to be signing a new contract at the club, but are prepared to bite the bullet and see the Spaniard leave for free in a year’s time.
This means that United boss Louis van Gaal will have to plan ahead for a replacement, and given his good relationship with Cillessen – with the pair having worked together with the Netherlands national team at last year’s World Cup – he may launch a bid for the Ajax keeper.
Van Gaal will be encouraged by the news that Ajax manager Frank de Boer has said that it would be hard to keep hold of Cillessen should United come calling.
“For us it would be a disaster if that’s going to happen because it’s already very difficult to find a good goalkeeper, especially if you have the best goalkeeper in Holland,” de Boer said.
“We have to wait but the transfer period still has a long way to go.”
