The Red Devils missed out on long-term transfer target Renato Sanches to Bayern Munich earlier this week but they’re already hot on the heels of an alternative in the like-minded Mario.
An impressive 2015/16 campaign has seen the 23-year-old net seven times across all competitions and produce strong form in a variety of different roles, spanning both flanks and central midfield.
According to The Daily Star, United have already held talks with the Portugal international’s representatives and are prepared to offer him a £140k per week contract at Old Trafford.
Sporting remain reluctant to sell but Mario’s contract includes a £45million release clause, which United now look set to activate during the summer transfer window.
It is further claimed president Bruno de Carvalho has also held talks with the player, who confirmed his interest in joining the Premier League club ahead of next season.
