Man United set to up chase for German ace

Manchester United are plotting to up their interest in German centre-back Mats Hummels with Paris Saint-Germain having ruled out the sale of Marquinhos, according to reports from The Express.

The Brazilian defender was thought to have emerged as a fresh target for the Red Devils in recent weeks amid speculation that his future at the Parc des Princes has been plunged into doubt.

David Luiz will officially make his move to PSG from Chelsea after the World Cup, where he is expected to slot into the back club’s back four alongside international team-mate Thiago Silva.

This will drop Marquinhos to the bench, which has prompted talk that he could be sold.

But the Parisians have revealed that their man will not be leaving, which has encouraged United to set their crosshairs firmly back on Hummels.

The German international has been mooted as van Gaal’s preferred target for some time, and has already hinted that he could be tempted to swap Dortmund for Manchester.

A new centre-back is thought to be the club’s priority with Rio Ferdinand and Namanja Vidic set to no longer be at Old Trafford in 2014/15.
