Manchester United soared into the next round of the FA Cup with a resounding 6-0 thumping of League One outfit Tranmere Rovers on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils were in a rampant mood at Prenton Park as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer witnessed six different goalscorers find the net.

In reality, it was over before half time with five of the six strikes coming before the break.

Harry Maguire opened the scoring before Diogo Dalot and Jesse Lingard quickly racked up two more inside six minutes. Phil Jones even got on the scoresheet before Anthony Martial slotted home.

Mason Greenwood finished the rout 11 minutes into the second half.

On the Chalkboard

Despite playing opposition some two divisions below, the fourth round triumph offered light into a potential solution that could help save Solskjaer his job.

According to the Daily Mail, the club will consider sacking the Norweigen should results not improve with England boss Gareth Southgate a front-runner post this summer's Euros, while Robbie Fowler claimed in his column for the Mirror that he was under massive pressure prior to this cup tie.

Solskjaer opted for an interesting system tweak, playing a 3-4-1-2 that utilised Mason Greenwood in attack alongside Anthony Martial with Jesse Lingard sitting behind in the hole. Luke Shaw and Dalot were deployed as wing-backs with Maguire, Jones and Victor Lindelof at the back. It paid off, so it would be wise to stick with it.

Firstly, it meant that Jones, who fans have often ripped into, wasn't left isolated at the back as he put in a commanding display. The 27-year-old recorded five clearances, two tackles and one interception, which is above his averages in the league this season.

Someone's got to own them: Who do these incredibly unwanted PL records belong to?

And then up front, it gives them more numbers in and around the box, instead of the usual solitary number nine. Both Greenwood and Martial got on the scoresheet and between them, per SofaScore, managed six shots at goal and four key passes, showing that they thrived off having support around one another.

United have a tough run of fixtures coming up, starting with trying to overcome the deficit against local rivals Manchester City in the Carabao Cup before facing top-six challengers, Wolves and Chelsea.

This formation can aid the task ahead if Ole is brave enough to run with it against much better opposition. His job could clearly depend on it.
