Man United star’s epic performance vs. Liverpool in numbers

Say what you want about Manchester United last night at Anfield – they got the result they travelled to Merseyside for. If you take a perceived lack of ambition on the part of Jose Mourinho off the table, the Red Devils wanted a point, got a point and put in the sort of pragmatic showing that has become the hallmark of ‘The Special One’s’ career.

Before kick-off, many were debating whom United’s key man would be over the 90 minutes, with the bulk of suggestions circling around Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but it turned out that Ander Herrera was Mourinho’s key player.


The Spaniard was deployed in the centre of the pitch alongside Marouane Fellaini and put in the kind of showing that has made him somewhat of a cult figure at Old Trafford.

His eleven interceptions were the standout return, but his seven accurate long balls were also perfect for United’s system. Will he keep his place in the XI for coming weeks? Perhaps…
