The Red Devils’ stopper has been linked with a switch to the Bernabeu for much of the last few months, with talk of a deal having become ‘official’ when Louis van Gaal admitted that his stopper had an offer from Los Blancos at the end of last season.
However, even though that was back in May, De Gea remains a United player and has even travelled with the club for their pre-season plans in America.
Despite this, Real remain interested, but with talks between the two sides having not progressed as desired they are willing to back off until August when a greater effort is expected.
Although De Gea remains a major target, the La Liga giants have already signed Kiko Casilla to replace Iker Casillas and boast Costa Rican glovesman Keylor Navas – who was recently handed the No.1 jersey.
The United glovesman will be a free agent in 12 months’ time, which leaves the door ajar for Real to hold off for a season before making a move.
