The Holland international is believed to be Louis van Gaal’s major target for the upcoming transfer window, after his pursuit of Arturo Vidal over the summer ended in disappointment.
LVG has coached his compatriot over the course of the past few years in the Netherlands set-up, and is known to be a massive fan of the 24-year-old.
A long-term injury – which ruled him out of the World Cup – prevented a move for Strootman during the last transfer window, but the United chief is keen to push a deal now that the player is returning from his set-back.
Roma’s owners have stated that their man will not be sold, but the former PSV Eindhoven ace has now asked for the move, which may sway their stance.
Strootman is said to be eager to work with Van Gaal and knows that he could receive a massive boost on his £25,000-per-week salary at Old Trafford.
United are also looking at Sami Khedira of Real Madrid.
