The Dutch midfielder has long been mooted as the Red Devils’ major target for 2015, with Louis van Gaal known to be a big fan of his former Netherlands international player.
But Strootman’s long-term knee injury – which prevented him from playing under LVG at the World Cup – as well as the Giallorossi’s reluctance to sell, scuppered a summer move, and has led to talk that the Premier League giants may have to wait until the end of the season to make move.
However, ESPN claim that sources close to United have revealed to them that a deal in January could be on due to Roma’s early exit from the Champions League.
The financial hit is expected to be a big one for the Italians, despite suggestions that they were prepared for the disappointment.
Strootman is valued at around £30m, and is seen as the Serie A side’s most valuable asset.
Reports also indicate that Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar is a January option.
