According to II Mattino, Manchester United have approached Napoli over a move for Dries Mertens in this summer's transfer window.

What's the story?

United are expected to be busy this summer, with head coach Jose Mourinho looking to assemble a squad that is capable of challenging Manchester City for the Premier League title next season.

The Red Devils are well-stocked in forward positions, but Anthony Martial continues to be linked with a move away from the club, which would open up a spot in the final third.

According to II Mattino, Mourinho is extremely interested in signing Mertens after being made aware that the Belgium international could be available for £27m this summer.

Indeed, the report claims that a clause in the attacker's contract means that he can join a foreign club for £27m at the end of the 2017-18 campaign, and United want to swoop quickly to tie up his signature.

Would Mertens be a good signing?

The 30-year-old joined Napoli from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2013, and he has scored 89 times in 230 appearances for the Italian giants in all competitions.

This term, meanwhile, he has managed an impressive 21 goals and 12 assists in 46 matches.

Capable of operating in a number of positions in the final third of the field, Mertens would bring flexibility, experience and a serious goal-threat to United.

Marcus Rashford and Martial are seen as serious talents by Mourinho, but the United boss signed Alexis Sanchez in January due to his experience on the biggest stage, and Mertens would be able to hit the ground running for the English giants.

If United can sign the Belgian, who has also previously been linked with Chelsea, for £27m at the end of the season then the deal is an absolute no-brainer when considering what he would bring to the team.

That said, it would be another hammer blow to both Rashford and Martial, with the pair already said to be frustrated by their lack of starts since Sanchez arrived at Old Trafford.
