Manchester United are close to sealing a £21.5m move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan to kick off what could be a big summer of activity at Old Trafford, according to reports from Sky Sports.
The 24-year-old pass-master is due to be a free agent at the end of next season, and it’s believed that the player’s wish to leave and his looming free agent status have convinced the German side to sell.
Dortmund lost star striker Robert Lewandowski to rivals Bayern Munich on a Bosman deal last summer, and are reluctant to see another big name player walk out of the Westfalenstadion.
United are thought to be willing to pay up now, with Louis van Gaal having already suggested that he needs to add creativity to his side during the looming transfer window.
A fee of £21.5m has been all but agreed with the Bundesliga side, and Gundogan’s worrying injury record has not deterred United.
He was recently on the treatment table for over a year with a back problem, which cost him a spot in Germany’s triumphant World Cup squad.
