According to L'Equipe, Manchester United are ready to move for Sevilla defender Clement Lenglet.

What's the story?

United boss Jose Mourinho is believed to be desperate to sign a new centre-back this summer, and the Red Devils have been strongly linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur's Toby Alderweireld.

Tottenham are currently playing hard-ball when it comes to Alderweireld's transfer value, however, and it has been suggested that United could now drop their interest in the Belgium international.

According to L'Equipe, the 20-time English champions are prepared to bid £31m for a player who has been linked with Barcelona in recent weeks.

The Catalan giants were believed to be keen to tie up a move for the Frenchman before the start of the World Cup, but United look ready to battle for the signature of the highly-rated defender.

What are Lenglet's credentials?

Lenglet started his professional career with Nancy, and made close to 80 league appearances for the French club before joining Sevilla in January 2017.

The 22-year-old has gone from strength to strength during his time in Spain, and made 54 appearances for his La Liga outfit during the 2017-18 campaign.

Boasting aerial prowess and composure on the ball, Mourinho is believed to see Lenglet as an upgrade on both Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, who had their problems last season.

United have already secured a deal for Brazilian midfielder Fred, whilst Porto's Diogo Dalot will soon sign on the dotted line as the Red Devils boost their squad following the 2017-18 campaign.

Lenglet also impressed in the Champions League last season, and was indeed part of the Sevilla side that knocked United out of the competition.

Alderweireld, who is no spring chicken, could well cost United upwards of £75m this summer, and a £31m deal for Lenglet might well make a lot more sense.
