Manchester United are set to up their interest in Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez after the youngster rejected the offer of a new contract from the La Liga club, according to reports from the Mirror.
The 21-year-old has been linked with the Red Devils for some time, with scouts from Old Trafford understood to have been monitoring his progress closely.
Atletico have remained keen to keep their man all along, but an offer of fresh terms made to Saul is believed to have been rejected by the playmaker, and reports claim that United have viewed this as a green light to step up their pursuit of the player.
The Spaniard – who spent some of his early career with the Rojiblancos’ bitter rivals, Real Madrid – has been a first-team regular under Diego Simeone this term, making 21 appearances in La Liga action.
His current deal with Atleti runs until 2010 and has a £25m release clause.
