Manchester United’s hopes of signing Aston Villa defender in January have been dealt a blow, according to the Telegraph.
Villa chairman Randy Lerner insists he will not allow both Ron Vlaar and Fabian Delph to leave the struggling Premier League club in January.
Vlaar was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford last summer after impressing for Holland under United boss Louis Van Gaal at the World Cup in Brazil.
And after rumours of Van Gaal hoping to finally complete a deal for the defender this January, Lerner has moved quickly to deny any possibility of a deal.
But, both Vlaar and Delph are in the final year of their Villa Park contracts and, if they are not sold in January, could opt to leave the club on a free next summer.
Villa are currently on a run of five successive Premier League defeats and are looking at a fourth consecutive battle for Premier League survival.
Lerner knows he risks seriously damaging Villa’s chances of avoiding the drop if he allows his two players to leave in January, but is struggling to convince them to sign new deals.
