Manchester United have been dealt a blow in the race for Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan, with the German club’s CEO, Hans-Joachim Watzke, and the player’s agent, Ilhan Gundogan, having opened the door to the midfielder signing a new contract at the Westfalenstadion.
The Red Devils have been heavily linked with the classy pass-master in recent months, with Sky Sports having even claimed that a deal was close to completion back in April.
Since then talk has cooled, but BVB’s confession that their star, who has just over 12 months to run on his contract, would definitely be leaving had fuelled transfer talk.
However, a recent claim by Watzke that Gundogan may commit to Dortmund has now been followed up by another hint from the Bundesliga club’s big-shot:
“There is a certain chance that Gundogan will renew his contract at BVB.” He told Suddeutsche Zeitung.
Gundogan’s uncle and agent, Ilhan, has also weighed in on the matter, suggesting that a conversation with new manager, Thomas Tuchel, has had a big impact on his client:
“If you had asked me last week I would have said that Ilkay will certainly leave Dortmund this summer, but now it is clearly an option to sign a new contract at Borussia,” he is quoted by ESPN.
“This was a very good discussion, Tuchel’s plans for Borussia are so exciting that Ilkay is pondering them at the moment.”
Gundogan has been mooted as a potential successor to United veteran Michael Carrick, who will be 34 soon.
