Man United’s failings made me reject them, says Dutch star

Wesley Sneijder has revealed that Manchester United’s failure to qualify for this season’s Champions League put him off of joining them over the summer.

The Galatasaray playmaker was heavily linked with a move to the Red Devils during the last window, with reports having suggested that Louis van Gaal wanted his compatriot at Old Trafford with him.

LVG has coached Sneijder for some time at international level, and is known to be a big fan of the veteran passer.

The 30-year-old is understood to have been approached by United to discuss a deal, but the prospective move failed to happen as the club instead smashed their transfer record to land Angel di Maria.

And now Sneijder has revealed that he was contacted by Van Gaal’s side, but that a lack of Champions League football – which he plays in Istanbul – caused him to dismiss their offer:

“Louis is one of the most intelligent men in football – and I knew of Manchester United’s interest in the summer.”  He is quoted by The Metro.

“It was flattering – but I am very happy in Turkey – and it is very hard to leave Champions League football.”

Sneijder has been linked with United on several occasions through his career, and was also on Liverpool’s radar when he joined Gala in 2013.
