The calendar year of 2016 brought a lot of ups and downs for Manchester United, but the end of the turbulent twelve months witnessed the Red Devils of old come to the fore.

Poor runs of results have been followed by a sequence of good performances, but apparent player fall-outs and a big managerial change all occurred for the Red Devils, so, on the whole, the last 365 days have been disappointing.

However, throughout the years at Old Trafford, many great goals were scored. Results may not have gone the way of the Red Devils, but the high standard of strikes has at least provided some joy.

From long-range drives, to neat team moves and some superb individual bits of skill, there really were some crackers in 2016.

We decided to open the vault and count through the team's finest goals of 2016, and here are the top FIVE...

5. Marcus Rashford - Manchester City

2016 saw the dawning of a new era at Old Trafford when youngster Marcus Rashford made his debut for the Red Devils.

In fact, Rashford became the youngest scorer in a Manchester Derby in March and further enhanced his reputation as one of  English football's brightest prospects.

Rashford left City defender Martin Demichelis for dead before calmly slotting past Joe Hart in the City goal to give help his side to a comfortable victory.

4. Anthony Martial - Everton

With the exception of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, little to no optimism could be found at Old Trafford last season.

Martial's mega-money move to Old Trafford had its rewards and none more so than his last minute semi-final winner over Everton in the FA Cup.

Martial's composure guaranteed United a place in the final of the cup before they claimed their first crown since 2004.

3. Paul Pogba - Swansea

After such a turbulent start to his returning career at Old Trafford, Paul Pogba seems to have finally settled into the role as the club's midfield general.

Pogba's exceptional volley at Swansea summed up his capabilities and set United on their way to a comprehensive victory.

2. Anthony Martial - Stoke

For the second time in this list, Anthony Martial appears, but this time for his stunningly well-placed curling shot against Stoke in February.

United ran out comprehensive 3-0 winners at Old Trafford, and Martial's goal is still fondly remembered by the Red Devils faithful.

1. Henrikh Mkhitaryan - Sunderland

The winner of this impressive listing is entirely deserved, and it took until the final week of 2016 for United supporters to witness something so wonderfully brilliant.

Anything like Henrikh Mkhitaryan's scorpion kick had not been seen in the Premier League before, and it was named the goal of December by Match Of The Day.
