Mata thinks very highly of Koeman, who gave him his senior debut for Valencia, and would love to work with the Dutchman again. Nevertheless, Mata felt he had to at least try and convince Mourinho he was capable of being a key member of Man United’s new regime.
But Sunday’s events may have finally confirmed what was suspected all along, that there was only ever going to be a peripheral role for Mata were he to stay at Old Trafford.
Once the Paul Pogba transfer back to the Red Devils has been confirmed officially, a culling of the bloated Man Utd squad will begin.
And the popular Spaniard is likely to be the most high profile victim of the clear out, with Goodison Park being the most likely destination if he were to stay in the Premier league.
