Manchester United’s hopes of luring Paul Pogba back to Old Trafford in a deal worth in excess of the British record £59.7m Angel di Maria cost them have been boosted, with reports from the Daily Star claiming Juventus are eyeing Axel Witsel as his replacement.
The Red Devils let the now 21-year-old Frenchman leave them on a free transfer just a few years ago after he became frustrated with his lack of game time at Old Trafford.
He has since shone with Juve, emerging as one of the continent’s best central midfielders while helping the Old Lady to back-to-back Serie A successes and earning a spot in Les Bleus’ senior set-up.
With Pogba having been so impressive of late, United have been linked with a staggering swoop to bring him back, with Juventus understood to value him at around £75m.
His agent Mino Raiola has also suggested that the youngster could leave Turin, and these claims are further backed up by suggestions that Witsel is seen as the ideal replacement.
Reports claim that the club are working on a deal to land the Belgian from Zenit Saint-Petersburg should they lose Pogba at the end of the season.
