After arriving in a mammoth £80m deal from Leicester, Manchester United would surely have hoped Harry Maguire would walk into the defence and take charge of the situation a la Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool. Instead, the England international has struggled to make the Red Devils defensively stronger, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side having now conceded 18 goals in just 15 Premier League games of the season.

And on Wednesday night against rivals Tottenham at Old Trafford, the 26-year-old was arguably one of the poorer performers in what was an impressive victory for the home side. As per Sofascore, he won just 50% of his duels on the ground, and committed one foul, and didn't seem overly comfortable with how deep Harry Kane seemed to drop. There was almost a sense of indecisiveness in his defending in whether to go with his man or not, and it was unsurprising to see him make just two tackles all game.

Having seen his display, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their displeasure, with many particularly frustrated by how much the Red Devils paid in the summer.

A few supporters of the Manchester side hearkened back to Chris Smalling, who was the casualty of Maguire's summer arrival. The former Fulham defender headed to Serie A giants AS Roma on a season-long loan, and some fans felt Maguire hasn't even shown he is better than the 30-year-old.

Some fans were particularly annoyed at his distribution with the ball, and when looking at the underlying numbers it is easy to see why. He completed just four of his eleven attempted long balls and lost possession 13 times - on one occasion from a United throw-in, Maguire simply Spurs the ball back by kicking it out again.

Whilst some United fans have been critical of his performances - and it is easy to understand why given the price tag involved - Maguire should still be given some time to adjust to his new surroundings. Big-money deals aren't always a guarantee of success, and the former Leicester man just appears to be taking longer to fully acclimatise himself to his new environment. If the Red Devils can remain patient with him, then the centre-back will surely come good for the team.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have been told which Premier League star can "bolster their prospects".
