Speaking on Match of the Day 2, Martn Keown has slammed Manchester United midfielder Fred for his performance against Newcastle.

What did he say?

The Brazil international delivered another underwhelming display against the Magpies, winning just two duels over the course of the 90 minutes, and losing possession 13 times.

After seeing the 26-year-old's lacklustre performance, Keown ripped into the midfielder's ability on the ball. He said (as quoted by The Daily Mirror): "They're so inept in possession. Fred, it's almost becoming a joke when he gets the ball. I know it's good closing down but you've got to be able to control it and pass. If that's the central midfield then there's not going to be anything created."

Money poorly spent

To think this is the same man who was supposed to be of interest to Manchester City. Fred's alarming decline since moving from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer of 2018 has perfectly encapsulated the problems at Old Trafford. A lot of money spent, but nothing of note to show for it.

Against Newcastle on Sunday, the Brazilian did very little to help the side's attack, contributing zero key passes, whilst he was equally ineffective off-the-ball too, making just the one tackle. Just how long do the Red Devils give before they cut their losses on their £47m signing?

For Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to truly clean up the mess he was left with, under-performing players like Fred simply have to be shipped out.
