Manchester United and Bayern misfits set to trade places

According to reports from The Express this afternoon, Manchester United are set to ditch summer signing Ander Herrera in favour of Bayern Munich misfit Xherdan Shaqiri in January.

The Red Devils only signed the midfielder for a £28million fee in June from Athletic Bilbao. But he was a target Louis van Gaal inherited from David Moyes and the former Spain U21 has since gone on to make just five Premier League appearances for the Old Trafford outfit, due to a mixture of injuries and turbulent form.

It’s now believed Herrera could be axed after just six months  in a swap deal for Bayern Munich’s Xherdan Shaqiri, also linked to the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal over the last 18 months.

The Swiss international impressed at the World Cup, creating more chances per match than any player at the tournament, but has continually failed to become a starting XI regular since moving the Allianz Arena from FC Basel in 2012.

German publication Bild claim Pep Guardiola doesn’t view Shaqiri as ‘clever enough’ to be a key player for the Bundesliga champions and could resultantly leave in January for around £18million.

The alleged swap deal however would involve £7million plus Shaqiri, who meets van Gaal’s admitted need for more wingers, and its believed he’ll accept Bayern’s bid in the New Year.
