The Premier League champions have been linked with the Argentine for some time, and were believed to be considering a bid for his signature last summer.
Their interest cooled over the course of the past year, but now new chief David Moyes is keen to reignite their pursuit.
Gaitan has been a Benfica player for three years, and enjoyed, arguably, his best campaign last term, helping the Lisbon giants reach the Europa League final and narrowly miss out on the league title.
The 25-year-old is reportedly happy in Portugal, but may be tempted by a move to one of Europe’s elite clubs, although he will not attempt to manufacture a transfer.
Moyes is thought to be very tempted by the attack-minded midfielder, and will step up his efforts to lure him to Old Trafford once the transfer window opens.
It’s likely that United will face opposition for the South American, with domestic rivals Arsenal thought to be keen.
Moyes is also said to be keen on Barcelona starlet Thiago Alcantara, who recently helped Spain’s U-21 squad claim European Championship glory.
Manchester United fans, would you like to see Nicolas Gaitan at Old Trafford next season?
