Man United boss may turn his back on captain, says ex-star

Former Manchester United star Paul McGrath believes that Wayne Rooney has put his spot in Louis van Gaal’s XI in jeopardy after seeing red in the weekend win over West Ham.

The Red Devils captain was sent off for a petulant kick out at Stewart Downing and will now miss the next three league games – including the big clash with Chelsea.

LVG has suggested that Rooney is now a guaranteed starter when fit given his status as club skipper, but United have a wealth of options ready to step in and take his spot, including Juan Mata.

And McGrath feels that Van Gaal could alter his stance in regard to the England ace if his team impress in his absence:

“They have got so much talent up front that Wayne is probably not going to be missed as much as people think he is,” he told talkSPORT.

“Van Gaal is going to have to change the whole front system around and it might work better. You never know.

“I would have Wayne Rooney in there every time but he has given himself a problem by getting out [of the team] so simply. He has given Van Gaal a problem because he can say, ‘do we really need Wayne sprinting round the pitch, kicking people and maybe being petulant?’ And we are going to find out whether he does.”
