Manchester United braced for Milan bid

Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic

AC Milan are preparing to bid for Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic in the summer, according to reports in the Metro.

The 31-year-old defender will be soon entering the final year of his contract, and after having an injury hit season, it’s possible Sir Alex Ferguson could be prepared to sell the defender.

Vidic joined the club in 2006, and has been one of Ferguson’s key players over recent years. But after missing the majority of the season so far, including being left out in favour of Jonny Evans in United’s Champions League match with Real Madrid earlier this month, Ferguson may have lost patience with the injury plagued centre-back.

Milan are looking for a new centre-back to partner Philippe Mexes, with head coach Massimiliano Allegri wanting a player of Vidic’s quality to start next to the French centre-back. Vidic would fit the sizeable hole left when Thiago Silva departed for Paris Saint Germain last summer.

Although the Italian giants are known for targeting players who are under 25-years-old, Allegri would happily make an exception for someone as highly rated as Vidic, who has won the Premier League four times with United.

Milan are 11 points adrift from Juventus in Serie A, and will need to focus on staying in the Champions League qualification spots. Meanwhile Vidic will only be focused on helping United to their 20th league title, and will be hoping to feature in United’s trip to Sunderland on Saturday.
