Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay

David Moyes has been given the all clear to try and sign Benfica’s Ezeguiel Garay, according to The Mirror.

The former Everton boss has officially taken over at Manchester United today, and already identified the centre-half as a transfer target.

Moyes is keen to bring Garay to the Premier League champions, after Benfica found a replacement for him. The Portuguese club are set to sign Argentinian defender Lisandro Ezequiel Lopez from Arsenal de Sarandi, opening the door for Garay to leave.

United have been interested in signing Garay since February, and Moyes has shared the club’s interest in bringing a new central defender to Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old, who played for Real Madrid, is expected to be sold for £17million. The centre-back scored once for Benfica last season, as the club finished second in the league table, just a point behind rivals FC Porto.

Moyes is also still eager to sign Everton defender Leighton Baines. The new United boss is keen to bring Baines with him to Old Trafford, and could make a second offer for the English defender. Everton recently rejected a £12m bid for the left-back.

United fans will be hoping to see Garay in a red shirt for the club’s first match of the new season, where the Red Devils travel to Swansea.

Will Garay join United? Would he do well at Old Trafford?
