Manchester United manager David Moyes is planning a summer move for Roma’s Mehdi Benatia following news that Nemanja Vidic is set to leave the club at the end of the season, according to reports from Tuttosport.
The Serbian international is ready to end his eight year stint at Old Trafford in a little under six months’ time when his contract expires, which will see the Red Devils’ chief’s defensive options greatly depleted.
Although the rugged Eastern European has not been at his peak in recent years, he is still a valued member of the first-team squad and a dependable performer.
As a result, Moyes is desperate to snap up a replacement, and sees Benatia as the ideal man to fill Vidic’s boots.
The 26-year-old only joined Roma last summer, but his impressive displays have already caught the eyes of some of the continent’s top clubs.
United are among the list of admirers of the Moroccan, and are said to be plotting a move once the next transfer window kicks into gear.
Benatia is believed to be valued at around £10m, and could be open to a switch to England where he would be handed a hefty pay-rise.
Moyes may also lose Rio Ferdinand at the end of the season, with the veteran centre-back’s future at united in doubt.
