Manchester United eye triple Benfica raid

Benfica winger GaitanManchester United are planning January moves for Benfica trio Ezequiel Garay, Nicolas Gaitan and Nemanja Matic, according to reports from The Express.

The Premier League champions endured a woeful summer of transfer activity, with new manager David Moyes seeing a number of his top targets slip out of reach prior to the deadline.

As a result of his failings, the Scot is already making plans for the New Year and has highlighted Benfica’s impressive trio as the men to help save the Red Devils’ season.

Gaitan is thought to be his top target, with United having been watching the Argentine for some time.

The wide-man has long been thought of as one of European football’s top talents, and has been attracting attention from Tottenham of late.

Moyes is confident that a switch to Old Trafford can be arranged, and is ready to meet his £25m valuation.

Garay is also on his radar.

The ex-Real Madrid man was linked with a summer move to United, but a potential deal failed to materialise.

The South American is seen as an ideal candidate to replace Rio Ferdinand and has been lauded for his technical ability in the past.

Matic is the final man on Moyes’ wish list, but he will have to battle off interest from Liverpool and Chelsea to snap up the Serbian ace.

Could this trio save Manchester United’s season?
