Manchester United face anxious wait on transfer deal

Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay

Manchester United have been told to pay £21.5milion for Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay, reports the Daily Star.

The Argentine has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League champions, who have been told they must pay the full asking price.

United were expected to sign the 26-year-old last month, but the deal is still yet to be confirmed as the Red Devils have instead offered  just £12.9million up front, with the rest payable in add-ons depending on Garay’s success at Old Trafford.

The offer has angered Benfica, who insist the defender, who has been house hunting in Manchester, is not for sale unless the valuation is paid out in full. The talks have left Garay in limbo, but the defender insists he is focused on his current club.

“I am tired of the rumours. I am just focused on Benfica and I will keep working hard. I have heard nothing official from United,” Garay said.

David Moyes has been looking at the Argentine defender as cover for Nemanja Vidic, whose injury hit season led him to playing just 19 Premier League matches last campaign.

Garay is expected to still be a Benfica player on Saturday, when Manchester United face Swansea in their first match of the new season.

Would Garay be a good signing? Is he worth £21.5million?
