Manchester United battled their way to a 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, with the Red Devils owing their hard-fought point to two second half Anthony Martial strikes.

Whilst the United boss, Jose Mourinho, will likely be satisfied with the draw, there will be elements of his side’s performance that will have caused him concern. For instance, the Blues were able to largely dominate the midfield battle throughout the match. Equally, United’s back line received little protection from those midfielders tasked with shielding them.

In his holding role at the base of Mourinho’s midfield, Nemanja Matic’s duty is to protect his team’s rearguard. However, he was all too easily bypassed by the home side on Saturday. The 6’4” Serbia international failed to make his physicality and experience count against his former club.
