Phil Jones was once tipped by Sir Alex Ferguson to become England captain, but now, the Manchester United defender is known more for his bizarre facial expressions than skill on the pitch.

The former Blackburn Rovers centre-back has come under fire various times during his five-and-a-half years at Old Trafford.

This season, Jones has started 21 of the Red Devils' 27 Premier League matches under manager Jose Mourinho.

Eric Bailly is widely regarded as first-choice centre-back at United, but his partner in defence has been interchangeable.

As well as Jones, fellow England international Chris Smalling has faced criticism for his performances.

There is one thing, though, that has arguably hampered Jones's progress over the years, and that has been injury.

This season, the defender has spent 17 days on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, while in the previous campaign he was on the treatment table for just under four months with knee and toe problems.

Today, Jones celebrated his 26th birthday, and unfortunately, not every United fan sent well-wishes.
