Manchester United were linked with five centre-backs this summer as boss Jose Mourinho looked to improve on his current choice between Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Viktor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.
Going into deadline day, the club had been linked with Toby Alderweireld, Yerry Mina, Harry Maguire and Jerome Boateng but failed to secure deals for any of them, with Everton securing the services of Mina from Barcelona.
On Thursday, United were also linked with Atletico Madrid star Diego Godin, but the Uruguayan ended up signing a new contract with his current side.
United ended the window having signed just midfielder Fred, young right-back Diogo Dalot and veteran keeper Lee Grant and the fans were clearly not happy with the lack of a new centre-back. With youngsters Axel Tuanzebe and Timothy Fosu-Mensah both departing the club on loan, the centre-back options at the club do not look capable of winning the league.

Woodward has to hand over the transfer side of the club to a director of football. He's clearly not cut out for this. Shambles. No reinforcements at centre back ,left back or right wing. #MUFC #WoodwardOut

Start of the season needing a right back, left back and centre back…come out with a 3rd choice keeper and an injured right back, United doing the business required 🤙🏻 #MUFC

To say I am bitterly disappointed with Manchester United's transfer activity would be an understatement. A Centre Back was all we needed from day one, and we couldn't even bring one in over the summer! #DeadlineDay #MUFC #SSN @SkySportsNews

Disappointed to see us not sign a centre back this window. I have very little hope of a successful season but I will support this club through thick and thin. Time for fans to rally behind the squad we have and start creating a positive atmosphere #MUFC

Alderweireld was desperate for the move. Mourinho was desperate for a centre-back. We're the biggest and richest club in the world, we knew who we were dealing with, we had months in advance to agree a deal. No excuses. None. The Glazers and Ed Woodward have failed everyone.
