Manchester United fans rage at winger’s inclusion in starting XI

Manchester United fans aren’t happy about one particular inclusion in their lineup this evening. The highs of Anthony Martial starting in the Champions League, and getting to see Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger play together in the midfield are wiped away by the fact that Antonio Valencia starts at right back and Matteo Darmian moves to left back.

The absence of Luke Shaw is, of course, to blame and this is the first Champions League game since his horrendous injury in Eindhoven the other week. But Manchester United fans won’t be too happy with the replacement.

When Louis Van Gaal signed Matteo Darmian, pundits and fans alike were unanimous in their praise for a good signing. But then Van Gaal did a Van Gaal and burst the bubble, claiming that Darmian was signed as backup to Antonio Valencia at right back. After spending £250m in just over a year, that’s not what United fans wanted to hear!

Now those fans will be hoping that Valencia’s stint at full back is short-lived and he’ll be heading back to his spot on the bench as an impact sub, right where he belongs.
