It is rare for Manchester United to disappoint their fans with regards to transfer announcements, but Friday presented a different story.

The club confirmed via their official website that Marouane Fellaini has signed a new two-year contract with an option to extend by a further year.

Many United fans had hoped that the divisive figure would move on, with plenty questioning his quality.

Last season, the midfielder played a bit-part role under manager Jose Mourinho, starting just five Premier League games and coming off the bench in a further 11.

Some fans were left frustrated by the Belgian's somewhat cumbersome approach on the pitch, and he is prone to committing costly fouls in dangerous areas.

Clearly, Mourinho feels that Fellaini still has a role to play, but it is unlikely that he will be a regular feature in the first team during the upcoming season.

After the contract news was announced, United fans expressed their unhappiness on Twitter.
