As the club's transfer pursuit of Leicester centre-back Harry Maguire drags on by the day, it appears Manchester United may be trying to build some sort of contingency plan.

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that negotiations for Maguire are ongoing despite the clubs' differences in valuation.

However, according to Portuguese publication O Jogo, United have had an attempt to sign Benfica defender Ruben Dias turned down after their offer fell short of the €66m (£59.9m) release clause in his contract.

After hearing the news that the Red Devils had suffered a setback in their chase of another defender this summer, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the matter.

Some supporters of the Manchester side questioned why the club simply hadn't paid Dias' release clause and expressed their frustrations at seeing the club penny-pinching attempts.

Indeed, a few United fans simply raised the idea of how the club were attempting to pay big-money for a 21-year-old with no Premier League experience and compared it to their negotiations for Maguire.
