According to the BBC, Manchester United have entered negotiations with Anthony Martial, with a new five-year deal apparently being offered to the Frenchman.
This development comes as something of a surprise and will likely baffle Red Devils supporters, as it was not so long ago that Martial’s agent was claiming that the player wished to leave Old Trafford, as reported by RMC Sport.
The aforementioned BBC report claims that a rift may exist between Martial and the Red Devils’ manager, Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese boss is said to have been open to a sale of the 22-year-old this summer. If this is true, and the club have decided to instead offer the attacker a new deal, then it could be seen as the board undermining the head coach.
The ramifications of these contract negotiations remain to be seen, but the consequences could certainly be significant for some key figures at the club.
Many Man United fans have had their say on the matter. Here’s a look at some of the reaction on Twitter…
Martial under the right coach could become something special. Of course he will outlast Mourinho!

Martial and UTD sorting out a new contract… this will be interesting. Unless him and Jose sorted stuff out I can’t see both staying.. especially if Martial is bearly ever starting… #MUFC

The Martial deal would be a pure indicator of the end of Mourinho at #MUFC. The club offering a player a long-term contract who doesn’t feature in the manager’s current plans? Just wow!
I like Tony. He will never thrive under Jose but he has to improve his own contribution.

Martial offered a deal is a strange one surely .. and if he accepts it it’s even stranger surely a move away for his career would be more in his mind ? Or does it mean a manger change shortly ? #mufc

Martial and Shaw running down the left wing for 10 consecutive seasons. #MUfC.

Martial will be a top player under any other manager but not in Jose
Someone who plays offensively then see the Toto’s magic

I can see why the board offering a new contract Martial make sense, but I can also see why it could be perceived as undermining Mourinho. Surly if we are going to achieve anything season this situation between Mou and Ed needs sorting sooner rather than later ! #MUFC

Struggle to see how people are getting so riled up about United wanting Martial to sign a new contract? He currently has a year left and is a player of considerable value. Why would United want to risk him leaving for nothing? #MUFC
