The most in-demand player in world football right now, Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt, has seemingly been linked with every major side imaginable.
The centre-back has been one of Manchester United’s main targets for the summer as the Red Devils plot their rebuild for next season.
It was even suggested that the Dutchman was aware he would be an ‘automatic starter’ at Old Trafford, and had taken note of Gerard Pique’s progression during his own four-year stay at the club.
But in a huge update from Gianluca di Marzio, French giants PSG are seemingly set to beat both United and Barcelona in the race to sign the much-coveted defender this summer.
Di Marzio even claimed the player’s agent, the infamous Mino Raiola, is in Paris to finalise a deal.
With only West Ham having conceded more goals in the Premier League’s top half than United, many Red Devils fans on Twitter were understandably disappointed by the news de Ligt may not be arriving to solve their defensive woes.
Could Harry Maguire be on his way to Old Trafford? Check out the video below to see why it would make so much sense…
Indeed, many seemed to point the finger of blame at Ed Woodward, and even referred back to the club’s pursuit of Bayern centre-back Jerome Boateng last summer as another example of their failed transfer strategies.
Some also questioned De Ligt’s motivation at opting to join PSG, and felt that the standard of football in Ligue 1 was nowhere near the sort of ‘challenge’ the Dutchman had previously suggested he was interested in.
Check out some of the stunned reaction of United fans to the latest update on De Ligt’s future below:
Woodward failed to sign us a Center Back last summer … it costed us deeply but then again Mourinho wanted Boateng

That’s embarrassing from De Ligt, why leave Ajax if ur going to PSG honestly?

He actually had the nerve to say that he wanted a ”challenge” and then go to PSG

Wants a challenge and goes to Ligue 1 uno

this is a very depressing evening here.
between de ligt choosing PSG and woodward taking official charge of transfers means, united will be staying in the dumps and can expect no improvement.
