Manchester United fans have had a strange Christmas. It’s the first time in decades that there has been quite so much speculation surrounding their manager’s future with still half of the season still to play.
United are still in a title race, and are at least still in with a shout of Champions League qualification, even if they are already out of Europe’s top competition already.
But what is even stranger for United is the possibility of a new manager being brought lined up before ousting the current one, a manager who divides football, one who is consistently portrayed as being on the dark side.
Yet the fans are intrigued by the idea of Jose Mourinho coming into the club. He’s a winner, and would guarantee United silverware, yet his style of play might seem more boring to United fans than even Van Gaal’s. And so seeing Mourinho scarves around Old Trafford will have divided opinion, too.
The fans were surely happier than usual with their team’s performance tonight, even if it resulted in yet another scoreless evening at Old Trafford, and another game on their winless streak.
Paul Scholes called the scarf-seller a ‘clown’ live on BT Sport and I’m sure many other United fans are just as divided over the club’s future.
