Manchester United keen on French freebie

Monaco midfielder Nampalys MendyManchester United manager David Moyes is eyeing up a swoop for Monaco midfielder Nampalys Mendy, according to reports from The Metro.

The highly rated French U-21 international has turned down a new deal with the mega-rich Ligue 1 side, amid fears that his first-team opportunities may be limited by the arrivals of star names such as Joao Moutinho.

Moyes is keen to take advantage of the situation, and could offer the 20-year-old a contract to move to Old Trafford in the coming months once his current deal expires.

Mendy has been likened by some to ex-Chelsea star Claude Makelele, due to his superb reading of the game and tackling ability.

The youngster made 31 appearances for the Mediterranean club last term, helping them to secure promotion, and forced his way into the into the French U-21 squad.

Monaco chief Claudio Ranieri is believed to value the player highly, but is resigned to losing him in the not too distant future:

“I do not understand his [Mendy’s] attitude. As soon as I saw him play, I said here is our Makelele. I trusted him and I played him.

“I think he will miss out on a great deal. But it’s his life, not mine. He has preferred to listen to his brother and agent and not his coach. It’s a shame.”

Claude Makelele was a huge hit with Chelsea, could Nampalys Mendy have a similar impact?
