Manchester United made attempt to hijack Arsenal deal

Real Madrid midfielder Mesut OzilManchester United made a late move to beat Arsenal to the signing of Mesut Ozil, according to reports from The Mirror.

The German international completed a shock £42.4m switch to the Emirates Stadium on deadline day, following Gareth Bale’s arrival at the Bernabeu.

Although it was said that United were not interested in the player, it has now emerged that David Moyes made desperate enquiries on Monday to push through a potential deal.

However, it was too late for the Red Devils, with the 24-year-old having already agreed to a move to the Gunners after turning down a lucrative offer from Paris Saint-Germain.

The Premier League champions instead switched their attention to Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera, but were unable to seal a deal for the Spaniard.

Ozil has been hailed as one of the top signings of the transfer window, and has eased the growing feelings of unrest in North London at the club’s lack of transfer activity.

The day also ended badly for United, who failed to get a deal for Fabio Coentrao done on time.

It is believed that a loan switch was close to being formalised, but the necessary paperwork was not completed in time to formalise the deal.
